To achieve our goal of presenting the most fluid translation possible, we have
used dynamic equivalence. (See http://nnl1.com/about.html for an explanation)
What follows is a listing of all terms that have been significantly changed
from the literal translation.

We have provided this text for those who are interested in the localization
process. Reading it is entirely optional, and is only recommended after
completing the ef Supah Preview due to spoilers within.

The game switched between past and present tense. We decided to present the
story in past tense, since Yuuko is actually telling the story to another person
in the full game. This differs from Wind and Haru no Ashioto, in which the
scripts were primarily in present tense.

クリスマス [kurisumasu]
Lit   Christmas
NNL   Christmas, Christmas Eve, eve of the holy night
We changed the terms based on context. As for the last term, the first fandisc
included a print of the church scene which described it as the holy night. We
felt that we had to include this term once during the scene.


ひねくれ者 [hinekuremono]
Lit   contrarian
NNL   nonconformist, rebel
The literal translation uses a word that is rather esoteric. We used two
synonyms in order to augment Yuuko's personality.


俺で遊んでるんじゃないか、こいつ [ore de asonderun janaika, koitsu]
Lit   She is simply toying with me, isn't she?
NNL   Her inscrutable nature was getting on my nerves.
We felt the original line did not convey Hiro's diminishing patience with Yuuko.
This is one of the few lines where we overrode the literal translation with an
offbeat edit.


聖夜の出逢い [seiya no deai]
Lit   chance encounter on Christmas Eve
NNL   Fortuitous Encounter
The date was repeatedly mentioned during the church scene, so we removed the
date during the chapter eyecatch.


痴漢ならあとにして [chikan nara ato ni shite]
Lit   If you are a molester, then do it later
NNL   Save your fantasies for later!
The literal translation was way too clunky. No native speaker would ever talk
like that.


血も涙も無いね [sara mo namida mo nai ne]
Lit   No blood nor tears
NNL   You are so heartless
Having no blood nor tears implies that one is an android with no conscience.
This idiom is not a well-known English one, so we scrapped it with something
that more people could relate to.


ちょっとは悪びれるとかしたらどうなのよ [chotto wa warubireru to ka shitara douna
                                        no yo]
Lit   Why don't you try not being afraid to do something?
NNL   How about getting your ass in gear!
Again, a clunky literal translation. Hanging around people who use crude
vernacular helped quite a bit when interpreting Kei's lines.


死んどけ [shindoke]
Lit   Die!
NNL   Go fuck yourself!
Powering up Kei was what we wanted, since she is quite the tomboy. Note that the
voice actor for Kei also did Nozomi from Wind and Nagomi from Haru no Ashioto.
It is rather interesting how the three are similar, yet Kei is the only true
tomboy of the bunch. Nozomi is docile and only puts on her game face to protect
her sister, while Nagomi is a textbook "tsundere" (resistant-but-yields-later)
character.


なんだよ、朝っぱらからそのテンションの低さは [nan da yo, asappara kara sono
                                              tenshon no hikusa wa]
Lit   What's up? You are totally out of it [tension] this morning.
NNL   What's with you? Didn't take your vitamins in the morning?
Used an English idiom.


愛は毎日同じ数だけ生まれて死んでゆくのだよ [ai wa mainichi onaji kazu dake
                                            umarete shinde yuku no dayo]
おまえが死ね [omae ga shine]
Lit   An equal number of loves are born and extinguished [die] every day.
      Then die.
NNL   Puppy love comes and goes each day.
      So do friendships.
This one gave us a headache. The original sounds rather dumb, and we weren't
sure if Kyousuke was referring to true love or teenage crushes. Therefore, we
came up with this workaround.


紘くん、平気？ [hiro-kun, heiki]
Lit   Hiro-kun, [you] calm?
NNL   Earth to Hiro-kun?
This line is rather an unusual way to ask if someone is okay. Since it's Miyako
we're talking about, we used an unusual but known English equivalent in order
to keep her odd speech pattern intact.


お、よみがえった [o, yomigaetta]
Lit   Oh, you were resurrected!
NNL   Oh, Phoenix Down!
Another Miyako-ism. Reikoku wanted this in here. You may now groan in a loud
voice.


のだ、じゃねえだろ。それだけは勘弁しろよ [no da, janee darou. sore dake wa
                                          kanbenshiro yo]
Lit   [Go with the flow], my ass. Let me go for [what just happened]...
NNL   Don't you think I deserve a‘get out of jail free’card after all that?
The succeeding lines indicate that Hiro is scared. Instead of acting sour, we
made him a meek boy.


スピーカーからヴァイオリンの澄み切った旋律が流れ始める [supiikaa kara vaiorin
                                       no sumikitta senritsu ga nagare hajimeru]
Lit   A serene violin melody started to stream from the speakers.
NNL   A low-fidelity but serene sound of a violin vented from the speakers.
So this is supposed to be CD quality?


げ、大村さんからだ [ge, oomurasan kara da]
Lit   Shit. It was Ohmura.
NNL   It was Yoshihiko Ohmura, the editor from hell with a terrible Kansai 
      accent.
Agilis pointed out the accent of this character. It also serves as tongue-in-
cheek reference to Wind's Tsutomu Tachibana.
