Info...

This is the second episode of Mizuiro 2003, a two-part OVA that is based off the 2001 Bishoujo game by NekoNeko Soft. Encoded from the actual DVD source for best results!

Valentine's day is nearing, and Kenji is wondering how he'll treat Hiyori the ghost on that day. Meanwhile, Mutsuki wants Yuki to help her make Valentine's day chocolate. With so much happening on this day, can Yuki and Hiyori stay together like they promised in their childhood? Also, will Hiyori find out why she is a ghost?

This is the second OVA of Mizuiro, published by NEC Interchannel. The first OVA was published by Pink Pineapple in 2002 and it involved gratuitous amounts of hentai. However, this one is suitable for all ages. The game, H OVA, and this OVA are not connected to each other in any way, so it's okay to watch this one by itself.

Story...

Since madgat loves Yuki, he preordered the second Mizuiro OVA disc as well. It took six days for him to get the DVD after it shipped on July 10th, so work started as soon as Landcaster prepared a LQ work raw for us!

We all knew our first episode sucked, so we were going to do a number of different things for this episode.

  • Translate all production credits. Why not?
  • Change the main font. It was too big, and it didnt suit the mood well.
  • Use directional subs. We pulled it off successfully in Wind OVA, so we thought it would be good here!
  • Do two quality checks instead of one so that we could catch as many errors as possible.

After some intense work, QC1 of the script was done in 5 days. The onscreens took another 3 days to do, along with the QC passes. Landcaster did some of the tough typesetting that required frame editing (such as the entrance sign). The QCs actually did something since we caught 22 minor errors in the first pass. After QC2, we caught another 5 errors. However, little did we know that there was still something left...

The encoding took a bit of time and delayed release by a day, but in the end it was all good. Landcaster still claims he did a horrible job on it. For the release, we used BitTorrent for the first time in an attempt to alleviate bandwidth. dovac's FTP (our distro method before anrp's fat pipe and Ed's BT) couldn't handle the load during this release because everyone flocked to his FTP to try to grab episode 1. The BT ended up with some very modest traffic.

Since the inception of Ed's BT, this has been downloaded hundreds, if not thousands more times since the initial release. And from those, we got a grand total of two e-mails! Meh.

Qualitative rating - 8

People were amazed at the quality of this fansub, and our two QC method would be used for all future releases. However, one major TL error and one minor grammar error prevents this from getting a 9.

  • Let's learn some Japanese!
    akuba = 'wild horse'
    hakuba = 'white horse'
    Reikoku heard akuba but Yuki clearly says hakuba. Oops. Correct line should read I want Oniichan to come pick me up like a prince on a white horse! I blame Reikoku's crappy headphones.
  • Since there is a short article in the episode called My Dream, both words should be capitalized, right? Dream wasn't.

I don't think we'll redo this, but since episode 1 needs to be redone, there's still a possibility...

Feedback...
"Very nice work. Tending the subs towards the person speaking is a pretty nice idea. Typesetting is appropriately done and everything is just right. Neither too much nor too little. Quality is great too.. woah.. what else can I say? It definitely puts those (shall not mention) self-proclaimed 'l337' fansubbers to shame."

"All in all i can see an awesome high quality work on [Mizuiro 2003], especially the your dedication of having to translate the credits behind! ^^ Hope you guys do more projects cos i'll be looking out for em! ^-^"
-- Gigz, translator for Anime-Kingdom, through e-mail

"Talking about different versions, there's also another group called "No Name Losers", they also translated Mizuiro and I'd venture to say they did the best job in terms of translation ..."
-- rayearth, translator for Miyuki-Fansubs, over animesuki forums
(Note: rayearth's group also did Mizuiro 2003, and he personally did their translation. So to hear those words from him is like... whoa. I still don't know whether he's kidding or not.)

Side notes...
  • The untranslated advertisment at the end of the episode is an ad for a 3-CD drama episode. Basically, those are like anime but without any video. Wai wai~
  • How many "crotch shots" can you spot? >_>
