Info...

This is a Japanese MAD (AMV) of Key's bishoujo games Kanon and AIR, called Eternal Dream S2. It spoils a fair amount of those games because there are many quotes (notably Ayu's ending) ... but if you've played that far and actually understood it all, you wouldn't need this fansub. Hee hee!

We also released a 640x480 version of this due to very high playback requirements (1.2+ GHz), but it has since been discontinued. If your computer can't play this, purchase a better computer.

Story...

Sometime in June 2003, Landcaster gave me this MV. Someone decided that we should do it. It's been so long so I forgot who... but I swear it wasn't me. I wonder why we did something from one of the most popular bishoujo games anyway. We're supposed to be doing obscure stuff... <_<

IwakuraLAIN offered to do the karaoke for us, so we accepted his help. The TL was done in the beginning of July but I was too lazy and didn't want to typeset the gargantuan amount of quotes. I went up to about one-third of the way with SSA before I gassed out. It looked like we were through with this one, too.

Landcaster came to the rescue and offered to do the onscreens using the sexy application called Adobe After Effects. We did a re-edit of the TL but realized that we didn't understand the context of many of the quotes. chaoticreign offered himself yet again because he played a good amount of Kanon and AIR himself. He was a big help. The project slowly progressed because there were higher-priority things on our to-do list.

After the Wind demo came out, Landcaster blitzed for about a week finishing up the rest of the onscreens. We were waiting for IwakuraLAIN to apply effects to the karaoke, but he claimed he lost motivation and couldn't think of anything. Since I didn't feel like adding effects myself, the karaoke ended up being the usual generic. We had to add a border around the video because there was no room for the karaoke. Intense CPU usage followed. madgat suggested that we encode a 640x480 version for the underprivileged... like himself.

This thing turned out to be very popular, even though people should know better than to download our releases because we suck. Go Kanon fanboys, go! Looking back, I think this is the only MAD we're going to do because of the onscreen pain. ~_~

Qualitative rating - 9

We didn't use a perfect source, and the karaoke was simple, and score a goal should really be achieve my goal (and unseparable should be inseparable, but the former is a real word due to Shakespeare).

But Landcaster did a phenomenal job. This is something we're proud of.

Feedback...
"Your source [sucks]. Open it in VirtualDub and go to frames 2561-2562 and 2564-2577 and you will see [some] very ugly dizzy blocks."

"Your Mizuiro 2003 sub blew my mind... until I saw your Kanon-Air Eternal Dream S2 MV sub. Absolutely impeccable. I wonder how many people out there truly appreciate the depth of detail you put into your work. Not only do you manage to get English fonts that trick the mind into thinking it's the same writing style as the Japanese (so the side-by-side is as one, and not seeming like subtitling at all), but the auras of color, transparency, absolute *exact* matching of motion, and even fading off to the sides (which must be hell, considering the differences in sentence structure)."

Side notes...
  • 165 MB for 4.5 minutes?! Are we crazy?! Well, this is one of the most intensive videos you'll ever watch. 25-minute anime episodes have nothing on this.
  • I was creating a perfect image of you... when it was simply a phantom of me. If you can translate the Japanese, you'll notice this isn't the literal picture-perfect translation. However, maboroshi can mean either image or phantom, and I really wanted to use the word 'phantom' at least once in the song. The literal TL was 'I was creating a perfect image/phantom of you inside me' but we really didn't think this worked out too well. After Reikoku and I analyzed the song to death, we figured that the singer's stalking tendencies warped his mind, and that he has realized it. Therefore, we thought this TL worked best.
  • Want to know the order of the onscreens during the 'rap'? The top and bottom onscreens combine with the left and right onscreens to make one quote. The inner top and bottom onscreens combine with the inner left and right onscreens to make another. The onscreens that pop up in middle make up one entire blurb (Ayu's ending) if you read them in order.
  • The song? Love Phantom by B'z.
