This was another backlogged item from 2005. Episode four was the first episode timed by madgat. He took over because I was in the middle of coordinating the alpha-testing for the game. I still had to scene sync the sucker, though, as madgat's work raws were different than the final work raw.
By the time of the release, madgat had timed all of the remaining episodes over the course of 2005. However, there were numerous issues. Reikoku admitted to spending less than an hour on each episode, and there were a number of problem lines that I would have to re-translate myself. The pressure to release the game before summer 2006 was also mounting, so in order to relieve some of the load, I wanted to ask around for one or two scene sync timers. The work raws, which had to be manually IVTC'ed, were only completed to episode six after all this time. As a result, I also wanted an additional encoder.
madgat did not like either idea. He thought he could do the scene sync timing, and was content on waiting as long as possible for Landcaster to finish IVTCing. I countered with the fact that the project was sixteen months old; our current pace was obviously not fast enough. Landcaster was also busy with school and would not have time to IVTC. madgat said that summer 2006 would be a good time to catch up, but Landcaster had been talking about taking some extra university credits during that time.
It became apparent that we were not competent enough to release a fourteen-minute episode at a pace of one every two weeks. I seriously believed that with some hard work and a bit of outside help, we could have finished the task in two, maybe three months. However, madgat refused to allow another fansub group to gain possession of his timed scripts and the VOB files, so I could do nothing but twiddle my fingers. Once Landcaster announced that he was taking summer school, I informed madgat that the project was dead and left the NNL staff channel for good. If Landcaster wants to get a life, then why the hell should I stick around? It was time for me to get a life as well.
Pulling the plug on Wind TV/KSS OVA was the hardest decision I had to make in the lifetime of NNL. I wish there had been a better outcome, because we let down all the people who were waiting for a good fansub of Wind. The other fansub groups that did the episodes as they came out on television did a mediocre job, but at least they finished it. |
